Dealing with plastic bags
New Zealanders use 1.6 billion plastic bags a year. Twenty-five million of them were recycled last year through a government-backed scheme. Critics say recycling is not the answer, and a levy must be imposed to discourage use. Lynn Freeman talks to the project manager for the Soft Plastic Recycling Project, Lyn Mayes, and to Ali Kirkpatrick from Boomerang Bags, a community group creating re-usable bags for shoppers to borrow and return.
