Iwi moves to put rahui on Waitakere Ranges

West Auckland iwi, Te Kawerau a Maki, wants the council to enforce a public ban on entering the Waitakere Ranges, saying it’s the only way to stop the spread of the killer Kauri dieback disease. The Executive Manager of Te Kawerau a Maki, Edward Ashby says the iwi is sick of waiting the council to act and so it will place a rahui on the area by Christmas – with support from Forest and Bird, the Waitarere Ranges Protection Society, The Tree Council and the Friends of Regional Parks. Kathryn Ryan also speaks with Auckland Council’s Director of Community Services, Ian Maxwell.
