Researchers develop prosthetic fin for turtles

Researchers from AUT’s BioDesign Lab have designed a prosthetic fin for injured sea turtles.

The fishing industry is the number one cause of harm to turtles – global data over the last two decades suggests around one million sea turtles are lost to fishing nets.

The new prosthetic for the precious species could see injured turtles returned to the ocean.

It was developed by PhD student Nick van der Geest.

He spoke to Susie Ferguson.
