Nearly 700 pilot whales beached themselves on or close to Farewell Split since last Thursday—the worst stranding on mainland New Zealand since records began in the 1800s. Of those stranded, more than 300 died. They strand on our shores in greater numbers than any other species of whale. Why?

#NZGeoAudio: Bittersweet victory after massive whale stranding

Hundreds of people braved challenging conditions to help refloat the surviving animals. Sunday morning revealed a small miracle – all but about 17 of the extra 200 that beached overnight on Saturday had struggled free on the high tide. By afternoon, they too had been saved.
