The cow was the world’s first vending machine. If you put grass in one end you got milk out the udder! Although we think the female cow may be docile and dull, the male of the species has impressed us for centuries. Most of us have forgotten just how dangerous a wild bull can be. That’s why macho men all around the world have wanted to test themselves against the mighty bull. Four thousand years ago in Crete, agile youths danced with graceful assurance around the snorting bull. Some of this challenge can still be seen in the Latin bullfight, and when people run with the bulls in Pamplona.

But the once mighty bull has now been tamed, and as such we tend to ignore the wonderful things that the cow does for us. From the indispensable yak of the Himalayas, to the water buffalo of Asia, cows are a vital part of our life. Even in the West cows are the basis of the five billion hamburgers eaten in America each year. The average cow produces more than 40 glasses of milk a day, which is 1500 gallons of milk a year!

It’s lucky that some cultures appreciate the true value of the cow. In Africa some tribes look after their cows so well that people believe it was cows that initiated the process of domestication. But if there is a cow heaven on earth, it must be India. Thanks to Hindu mythology, the sacred cow must be protected. They can pull carts and provide milk, but to kill a cow is unthinkable. It’s unlikely that cows will ever achieve such celebrated status in the West, but the next time you say “holy cow” – remember that they really are!
