The Black Robin – The Chatham Island Story

Fighting back from the brink of extinction, the black robin is a symbol of hope at Christmas time.

Produced by NHNZ

In the mid 1970s a small black New Zealand bird made headlines around the world. It enjoyed the dubious distinction of being the rarest of all rare birds. There were just five of them. Now after ten years and more than a little help from New Zealand’s Wildlife Service, Black Robins have increased ten-fold. The danger of extinction may very well be over. Since its inception the NZWS Robin Project has attracted international comment for this timely and spectacular success. It’s a story guaranteed to leave everyone with a lump in their throat.
