Sanctuary

Kapiti Island is one of the oldest wildlife sanctuaries in New Zealand. Since the 1890s it’s been a refuge for some of our unique wildlife. It’s also a workshop and resource for people working to preserve the species left to us.

Produced by NHNZ

Kapiti Island with John Kendrick and Geoff Moon.

John Kendrick’s experience as a cine photographer with the wildlife service goes back 20 years. He’s probably also one of the top wildlife sound recordists in the world – he supplies RNZ and BBC. He’s worked in just about every important wildlife location in NZ and its offshore islands. Geoff Moon has shared a lot of times and places with him, working as a photographer and writer. They visit Kapiti Island and introduce us to the place and its wildlife and the ranger. They show us some of their work and discuss the island’s management future.
