Land of Giants and Pygmies

South America’s Weirdest Animals is a 3-part series about South America’s wildest, weirdest and the most diverse animal life – from northern reaches of Colombia to the southern tip of Argentina and Chile.

Produced by NHNZ

A humorous look at South America’s strangest creatures. Stunning landscapes harbour elusive critters that have evolved to thrive here, from the smallest creature, to the largest beasts. The savannahs and wetlands of South America are home to some serious heavy weights; supersized 500-pound anacondas, the largest snakes in the world, hunt capybara: the world’s largest rodent tipping the scales at 200 pounds. The forests of Brazil are home to the largest parrot, the biggest black bird, as well the largest primate on the continent — the Muriqui. Whilst at the other end, there is the world’s smallest deer, the pudu, South America’s smallest cat, the kodkod, as well as tiny primates, like the diminutive common marmoset and the moustached Emperor tamarin.
