Gull City

Gull City appears to be a huge organised group of birds. In the various suburbs of the city, dapper little Red-billed Gulls – our most common “seagull” – noisily mate and breed, while rape and pillage take place all around.

Produced by NHNZ

On a dangerous and uninviting part of New Zealand’s coast, 20,000 red-billed gulls are clamouring for mates, stealing eggs, harassing chicks and scavenging around the neighbourhood.

Dismissed as noisy squabbling “seagulls”, during the breeding season a complex and highly structured lifestyle governs their behaviour.

However, organisation is no match for nature and breeding seasons are not always what they seem.
