Experience: Free-dive with Laurent

Go free-diving with reef ecologist Laurent Vigliola.

Produced by New Zealand Geographic

Scientists understand how reef systems function by looking at pristine examples, where all of species are present—a measure called ‘functional diversity’. Laurent Vigliola makes his assessment along measured transects, recording fish occurring at every station. But there are more qualitative surveys too—Laurent can get a good feel for the health of a reef by just free-diving around it’s shallows, eyeballing the diversity of fish and the health of the coral.
