What is the state of drinking water testing around NZ?

The Dunedin City Council is still hunting for the source of the lead contamination in east Otago, and has started a six million dollar project to replace 5km of old pipes. The latest test results show lead levels are below acceptable levels. But it has been 10 days since communities in the area were told to stop drinking tap water, and it’s not clear when spikes in lead concentration started. Earlier this week we spoke to Water New Zealand technical manager Noel Roberts, who told us there are a number of “ticking time bombs” around the country. He also admitted there are some places where he wouldn’t drink the tap water. So has this issue put the frighteners up other districts to make sure they don’t have any potential disasters coming down the pipes.
