A spill at a sludge treatment plant in Wellington has left residents downwind gagging on the smell.

Wellington Water says two mechanical failures at the treatment plant at the Southern Landfill led to overflows which would have created an odour.

But the contractor has brushed off comments from residents that the stench is lingering, and a solution is yet to be found.
