Undersea robots go deep in study of earthquakes

Undersea robots have journeyed deep under the ocean floor – collecting data that will shape our understanding of earthquakes, like the one that prompted mass evacuations earlier this month.

The state-of-the-art remote-controlled vehicles have also been exploring areas off New Zealand’s coast never before visited by humans.

It’s a collaboration between New Zealand and US scientists onboard NIWA’s research vessel Tangaroa which docked in Wellington this morning after weeks at sea.

RNZ reporter Hamish Cardwell and camera man Samuel Rillstone went along to meet the team.
