Timaru cleans up after Rangitata flooding

Travellers are welcoming the reopening of a road connecting the lower South Island to the north. On Saturday, the Rangitata River breached its banks, flooding the only two bridges allowing road access north and causing widespread damage. It took a lot of gravel and hard work, but the Timaru District Council has reopened Inland Route 72, over the Upper Rangitata Bridge to all traffic on Monday. But it’s been slow going, as reporter Tess Brunton found out first-hand.
