Residents get say on track upgrades in Waitākere Ranges

Aucklanders are being asked which tracks in the Waitākere Ranges they think should be next in line for upgrades so they can be reopened.

In May last year, the Auckland Council decided to close the ranges, to try and stop the spread of kauri dieback disease.

That came several months after the local iwi, Te Kawerau ā Maki, imposed a rāhui over the area.

Since then, the council has been upgrading certain tracks, to protect kauri roots and ensure people’s feet don’t spread the disease through the area.

The popular Kitekite Falls track reopened on Boxing Day, after a complete refurbishment.

Some tracks that were already up to a high standard were kept open.

The council has a list of tracks earmarked for work this year, but it’s about to begin consulting with locals about which tracks should be next.

It will be holding information evenings and drop-in sessions, and people will also be able to submit feedback online.

The council has been working with Te Kawerau ā Maki on the track reopening plan.
