Protection for sea lions in squid fishery needed – Forest and Bird

Forest and Bird is calling for better protection for endangered sea lions in a squid fishery south of New Zealand. An operational plan’s been issued by the Ministry of Primary Industries for the Auckland Island fishery, but Forest and Bird says the three options it puts forward don’t protect sea lions at all. It’s proposing a fourth option – that 17 percent of the fishery be closed while sealions are breeding, in a bid to ease their decline. Forest and Bird’s Katrina Goddard spoke to our reporter Laura Dooney.
