It’s not clear whether thousands of tonnes of plastic being sent from New Zealand to Malaysia for recycling is ending up on bonfires. Since China banned plastic imports at the start of the year, Malaysia has become a popular alternative market for the UK, Australia and New Zealand. But as RNZ revealed on Insight, illegal factories in Malaysia are burning and dumping the waste they can’t process, with devastating affects on the lives of nearby people and the environment.
