MPI opposed nitrogen bottom line over economic concerns

A new tough limit on how much nitrogen can be in rivers was opposed by the Ministry of Primary Industries because it was worried the economic impact would outweigh the environmental benefit.

The government eventually abandoned the idea of introducing the new measure even though experts said it was the best way to protect rivers.

It’s the first time MPI’s influence in the process has been revealed.
