Hundreds protest landfill in Dome Valley

Hundreds of opponents of a controversial rubbish dump proposal north of Auckland have been marching in protest through the city centre.

Waste Management has bought a block of Dome Valley land with the intention of making it Auckland’s largest dump.

About 400 people, including Wellsford residents and members of Ngāti Whātua, are on today’s hīkoi.

They’re concerned the dump could have a devastating environmental impact on the Hoteo and Kaipara rivers, where people still bathe and fish.

Ngati Manuhiri representative Mikaera Muru said it was possible leachate from the dump could seep out and harm the wellbeing of his community.

Auckland Council will be accepting public submissions on resource consent until 31 July.
