‘Dirty’ vessel ordered to leave NZ waters

A “dirty” vessel from Indonesia has been ordered to leave Tauranga because of fears it could bring in unwanted marine species.

The DL Marigold was given 24 hours to leave on Sunday after divers discovered barnacles and tube worms on the bulk carrier.

It was the first time the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has ordered an international vessel to leave a New Zealand port because of biofouling.

The ministry said the vessel was severely contaminated and would not be allowed back without proof it had been cleaned.

From May next year new rules will require all international vessels to arrive in New Zealand with a clean hull.

MPI can take action in severe cases in the interim.
