Australia bushfires: Town flees from flames to beach

A bushfire in the town of Tathra on the New South Wales south coast has destroyed almost 70 houses and damaged another 30. No one’s been allowed back into the town since the fire started on Sunday. At the height of the blaze residents had to huddle on the beach to escape the flames before being evacuated. Hundreds spent the night in nearby towns Bermagui and Bega and some had to sleep in their cars. Hamish Payne has lived in Tathra for 18 years and was one of those who had to leave his home. He told us he works as a store manager at nearby supermarket and helped organise food, drink, other supplies for those affected.
